3 Child-Friendly Exotic Pets That You Can Own Today

Living in a family can make you feel stressy about having a pet. Though pet is an excellent option to make your child active, you may not want to get a big pet like a dog or cat. We know dogs are the best companion for kids (particular breeds), but they also need care like a human baby. You already have one baby on hand to take care of; you won’t want one more.

For the solution to this confusion, you can always get small exotic pets. The plus point is they don’t need human baby care though they need some care and attention.

Having an exotic pet is more beneficial than having a dog or a cat. How? Below is the list:-

  • Having an exotic pet can make your child learn the values related to companionship and responsibility.
  • They can make your shy baby come out of his shell and do something entertaining.
  • Your baby will be drawn towards nature and will know its importance.
  • The child will learn to respect every living being.
  • They can also provide emotional support.

There are different types of exotic pets available, but not each is child-friendly. Now the question is what type of exotic pet you should get? The first thing to consider is that it shouldn’t be harmful to children. It should be easy to get along and handle. Training will be needed for both the ends (child and pet).

Exopetguides.com has come up with the three child-friendly exotic pets that you can own without any hesitation.

Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs can become a great starter pet for children. As for the reasons, there are many, but the primary one is that they are not too fragile. Other things that make them great child-friendly pets are:-

  • They don’t bite.
  • They are socially active and loves human company.
  • They need low maintenance.
  • They are affectionate and lovable.

They are easy to take care of; they eat grass hay, fresh vegetables, and pellet. Apart from that, they need fresh water, and some exercise or they will get an obese problem. Their cage needs to be cleaned entirely weekly.

Do you know? Even guinea pigs have a different type of personality just as human beings, so before getting one, make sure to interact with her as to know what kind of nature she will be having.  Funny, shy, bold, dominant, etc. can be her personality.

They also make cute sounds according to their feeling. You will be able to notice that only if you pay close attention to them. When they are overexcited or happy both they will jump over and over, will run to and fro continuously, or will kick out their legs alternatively, and this unique style of expressing is known as pop corning.

Parakeets

Parakeets can make an excellent pet. They are popular among all the age of humans because of their cheerful and sweet voice. Plus they are from parrot kingdom and who doesn’t like a parrot?

Even if it is your first time having a bird as a pet, you are good to go. Parakeets are cute, little, and colorful birds that like to interact with everyone. They are very social and can also learn how to talk.

You will need to give proper training to both child and pet to make them get along with each other. As for their diet, they need fresh fruit and food, and leafy vegetables (finely chopped!).

They are super active and can’t stay in a closed place. Remember to get a horizontal cage as their activities include climbing and flying (they fly horizontally). Don’t get a cage of zinc or brass; they can be toxic for them. The stainless steel is best for them.

Get some toys for your little birdie that will keep him busy and happy. The toys that he will like most are mirror studded or the one with bells. You can also opt for two to three parakeets at a time as this way you will be able to do your work.

Rabbits

Rabbits are also excellent pets and to be precise, for the children of 8 years or above. Children to play with fluffy things but remember it is not just a thing, right? Rabbits are like introvert creatures they can get scared from screaming voices of a child, and even their running around will freak them out.

Plus they are not easy to catch; your child may end up falling and getting scratched while running behind him. Rabbits don’t like being held, and obviously, as a baby, your kid would want to keep him, but in this, they both might end up hurting each other.

Above were the specified reasons for our denial of getting a rabbit for children under eight years of age.

Remember to get a pair of rabbits together, when you decide to keep them as a pet. This way, they will feel secure. As for their eating habits, you should provide them fresh vegetables, and fruits (it is a myth that they only eat carrots, in fact, they shouldn’t eat them much).

If you are planning to keep them freely roaming around the home then before letting them in, you should make your home rabbit-proof, as they have the habit of chewing on everything. (we would recommend buying a large cage.)
